    With US raising interest rates to control inflation, major global economies will continue to experience a slowdown in 2023. All eyes are looking at China to drive global economies out of recession.


    China is making a structural change in economic drivers from property, traditional manufacturing and internet to automotive, hi-tech manufacturing and new green energy. Besides investing in infrastructure, the government will continue to attract foreign direct investments (FDI) in the high-tech manufacturing sector. To encourage FDI, China is likely to further liberalize entry quarantine controls.



    While US and other major economies are raising interest rates, China continues to maintain a low interest rate policy to reduce corporate debt financing cost and encourage people to buy property. Besides being a key economic engine, a stable property market is important in building consumer confidence. As consumers become more confident, they will spend more which will in turn spur the economy. With research breakthrough in new COVID vaccines, the retail, food and travel industries can expect a long-awaited recovery in 2023.


    With a slow economic recovery, companies have become more cost conscious and are only willing to offer realistic market compensation when hiring talents. Companies sought candidates that have strong technical capabilities, stable in their career, able to withstand adversity and good team players with strong cross functional abilities. However, candidates have become more conservative and are less likely to change job. Hence, hiring the right talent will become even more challenging for employers in 2023.
